Sometime less than a month ago many of my conversations included speculation that we just might skip winter this year! Yeah, so much for that! So now, when I say "Spring is in the air" you may be ready to sign me off to the loony farm! I know what it's been like outside lately, and that out there it's only 17 degrees as I write this ... and the snow is piled high all around!
However, before you dismiss the thought totally, consider today's date. Isn't Valentine's Day the spring-board for Spring Fever? The urban dictionary defines it as "the wanting of the present to become summer." Elvis sings it, "Stir up the honey bees. Spring makes my fever right. Spring is here at last. Spring fever, my heart's beating fast ... the world's in love just look around."
And, if that's not enough for you, take a peek at Lakeland, FL. Pitchers and catchers reported to the Tigers' training camp this past Tuesday. One week from tomorrow they play their first exhibition game! Yes, Spring is in the air.
But the real clincher came for me yesterday ... Wednesday, February 13 around 10:00 a.m.!?! "What could it possibly have been?" you may be asking. Oh, I would love to hold you in suspense, but ... before I burst ... at that time Lori and I met in an isolated conference room and planned out ... Lent (which means spring), Holy Week, and Easter! And, for me, if that doesn't put Spring in the air, nothing will!
Lent ... Holy Week ... Easter ... the annual ... vivid ... personally needed ... reminders "that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6.3-4) This is what life is all about. This is the message we all need to hear ... and keep hearing ... over and over again. It puts spring in our legs and limbs ... our life and livelihood ... it puts Spring in the air!
As I am sure you know, Sundays were set aside long ago by Christians to be year-round 'mini-Easters' ... Romans 6 celebrations of Christ's victory over death and the grave ... that our every week might begin with the reminder that Spring is in the air ... new life in and through Christ Jesus ... "that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." And for me, that beats Valentine's Day ... yes, and even those boys of summer ... for it puts Spring in my air every day! And I pray it does for you, too.
