First of all, I really feel like talking about the Red Wings more than I do about Thanksgiving. Did you watch the game last night? These young kids have so much potential ... They can be totally outplayed for extended periods of time, but they are managing to hang close (thanks to great goal tending - last night by 'old man' Howard, who I believe is all of 34 years old) And, then, when they get behind, they kick it into another gear. Even when they lose these days they are fun to watch.
But, today is Thanksgiving.
When I opened up Facebook this morning I saw that I have three friends there who have birthdays today. I wonder what it is like to share your birthday - even if only occasionally - with turkey and all the fixings? Then, again, every year they share their day with the assassination of JFK.
The list of things for which I am thankful (or at least should be thankful) is endless. I often have commented that I live a "charmed" life ... but the proper term is blessed. I feel as though Paul is talking about my life when he writes, "God the Father of my Lord Jesus Christ has blessed me with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ. For he chose me in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. He predestined me to be adopted as his son through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he lavished on me in the Beloved One. In him I have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of my trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he richly poured out on me with all wisdom and understanding." (Ephesians 1.3-8)
1, 3, 4 Thanksgiving ... Oops, what happened to the 2?
The FIRST thing on my mind today was not Thanksgiving, yet it is easy for me to quickly list THREE (or more) things FOR which I am thankful. This is all well and good ... though you might take exception to my first thoughts today. However, Thanksgiving is not really thanksgiving if I skip the TO.
Of all my blessings, I believe what I am most thankful for is all the relationships of my life ... first of all with the creator of heaven and earth through his Son, Jesus Christ ... and then with my wife and family ... which then flows out to all 638 of you who receive this (and many many more who don't). But I still have not gotten to the TO! So, my friends, please hear me loud and clear: "Grace and peace TO you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks TO MY GOD for every remembrance of you, always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1.2-6)
Happy Thanksgiving, my friends ... I am remembering all of you in my prayers today ... with not only thankfulness FOR you, but also TO our Lord and Savior Jesus - the giver of every good and perfect gift (Jame 1.17).
