Voices - How many voices do you hear every day? FaceBook ... CNN ... Rush Limbaugh ... tabloids ... neighbors ... coworkers ... families. And this is just a small sampling of those that come from the outside. What about those from the inside? The voice that says, "You're inadequate" ... "Loser" ... Fear ... Shame ... Incompetent ... God's gift to mankind ... high and mighty. How many voices do you hear every day?

At this moment the voice I am hearing is "frustration." I have been trying for over a half hour to get into the internet on my laptop, without success. First it insisted upon doing an update. Then a restart. Then ... then .. then. I have lost track of the number of delays. I finally started writing this on my iPad (not something I had tried successfully before). When for the umpteenth time I was told there is no wireless internet in my house (or some other craziness), I restarted the lap top AGAIN ... and suddenly all is well!

I wonder how much good was accomplished by my listening to that "frustration" voice?

There is another voice - one that speaks both from outside and within - that would have us hear a very different message. It says "peace" ... "courage" ... "faithfulness" ... "sacrificial love" ... "trust" ... "patience". And it is the voice of Truth.

I think I need to inhale this voice for a little while (and perhaps, more than once) this day as it reminds me, "O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost part of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, 'Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,' even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is a light with you. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." (Psalm 139.1-14)

You don't need to need to hear my voice any more this day. The voice that wells up to eternal life in us is the one we all need to hear ... and keep hearing. "How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! ... Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" (Psalm 139.17, 23-24)

The Lord speaks. My frustration is gone. This thought is written (with plenty of time to spare). And I even learned something (how to write this on my iPad) that had been a mystery! "How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!" (Psalm 139.17) Ah, the voice of wisdom! The voice of Truth!
